Free Form Friday - For the % of Hair!

I don't know about you but I "love" my hair dresser. Admittedly I am a terrible product of 80's culture. I had hair the size of a football field with giant bangs and a satellite dish to boot. It was during this phase of my life that Sun-In was introduced as an OTC product. [allow me to also add that I am a total sucker for products of any kind due to the pretty packaging ~ its a sickness ] This was fine until I realized that the front of my lions mane was orange while the rest of my untouched virgin hair remained brown.

Q: What was it like opening up your own salon?

A: Harder then I ever expected, I thought it would just be exciting and not a lot of work. When someone new comes in and says " I love your salon" its makes all the hard work worth it!

This brings me to the second phase of hair destruction. Beyond the Toni Perm, Crimping and multiple curling irons. I apparently thought my hair needed a more hay stack feel to it and began coloring it BLEACH BLOND! This trend carried right into the 90's..ohhhh my lost years but we'll save that for now. Every 6 weeks on the dot I trotted my slender under fed self into my local Drug Store or Wal-Mart [those didn't come until later]. Purchased my $6 dollar bottle of hair color stripper and went home to begin the process.
In the late 90's I decided that I needed to look more business like and less trashy [HA!!]. So I made the executive decision to darken it up a bit. How hard could it be? Well it was traumatic to say the least. You see when I rinsed my hair ------- it was GREEN! No I'm not kidding...A lovely ashy greenie crispy color. I felt weak...I cannot call out of work because I messed up my hair. That's LAME...Off I went to work, with a baseball cap on my head. Dreading the next 8 hours of my life. Feeling humiliated and knowing the abuse was coming full on. To my surprise nobody said anything. I was grateful for their silence and thought..."Thank you God for letting them stay quiet." Well apparently God needed an even bigger chuckle than I was giving him because instantly after having that thought my boss leaned over my shoulder and said......I didn't realize it was Halloween.....Even as I write that it makes me laugh. And it was funny then just not as much as now.

Q:How has your business impacted the community?

A: We have created a healthier safer salon environment. The most rewarding day in this salon was the day a women came in that had never been to a salon because of chemical sensitivities, she now has an option.

Q: How has having your own business impacted you?
A: We are a salon with a safe chemical environment because of that I  now read ingredient labels of all types of products now not just food labels, I am more cautious about what chemicals I use on my body, use on my clients and put down the drain.Working in a salon for eight years before Acorn I always just thought about the clients hair not there overall health and well being.

Insert phase 3 - I spent an entire 6 months as a red hed. Not bright red like a raggedy anne doll, but auburn like an Irish Setter. Totally not my style however I had stripped ALL color from my hair and I was instructed to do nothing else to it. I have also failed to mention that my hair was very VERY long.
Insert the reason why I started writing this post. I was on the search for a hair dresser. Something that I'm extremely particular about. Well, now I'm particular about it....

Q: What do you like best about your profession?

A:  Making people feel and look beautiful!!

Q: Which tinges and coloring are most frequently asked for? Do specific age groups ask for specific colors?

A: Blonde foil highlights are the most popular, we also get a lot of multicolor foils highlights. I have noticed Lately that many clients are switching from complete gray coverage to a more natural blending.

This is when I met Laura. When we first met she was working at REGIS salon. I believe she looked at my hair and said..."What have you done to your hair???" Of all the people that I have allowed to wash, cut and color these lochs of beauty she is the BEST. She now runs her own Salon called Acorn Organic Salon in Dover NH. For us old timers it is right next door to where "Grateful Teds" record store use to be. They have the most amzaing organic hair coloring system. A pedicure and manicure station. And a fantastic environment to get your hair done.

Q: If there was one famous star that walked through your door for a cut, color and style who would you want that to be?

A: Reese Witherspoon always has great hair I would love to do her hair, I like a challenge its easy to pick someone that looks like a train wreck and make them beautiful I love to take someone who already looks great and make them shocked that I could make something good even better!

Q: In closing, What would you share with someone who is considering opening their own business?

A: Believe in yourself and what you do! Create a strong support system for when things get hard and always remember for every bad day you have earned a good day!

So, heres to you MY FAVORITE hair dresser in the world! And if you want to make an appointment call Laura at 603-617-3830 tell her I sent you.
